In this lab, students will be introduced to the lab safety guidelines, rules, and protocols created by the Biology Department at Evergreen Valley College. Students will also learn to name and identify the parts of a compound light microscope. Students will view prepared slides of Amoeba and Paramecium, and create labeled sketches of these organisms at various total magnifications in order to demonstrate their ability to focus a specimen using the compound light microscope.
Tasks
As the the first lab of the semester, course-related administrative tasks will also need to be completed. These include the following:
- Adding students to the lab in order of their waitlist position
- Reviewing the course syllabus, schedule, and requirements/expectations
- Reviewing the lab safety guidelines and important reference points in and out of the classroom (i.e., emergency phone, first aid kit, fire extinguishers and blankets, emergency exits, evacuation meeting areas, etc.)
- Biology kits (located in the top drawer next to each student; identify and check contents)
- Microscopes (located in the cabinets next to each student; review proper handling and storage)
These tasks should be completed prior to the introduction of the prepared slides/organisms and demonstration/explanation of proper microscope use.
