Encyclopedia of Biological Methods (Mattaini)

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

The Encyclopedia of Biological Methods (EOBM) helps solve a problem faced by many biology faculty: it is good practice to use primary research literature in our classes, but not all students have the same background in all the different methods, both historical and modern, used in journal articles. The EOBM is written to introduce biological methods to any student with a basic understanding of introductory-level college biology. It introduces information at the correct level of technicality, can be more trusted and directed than the results of a Google search performed by an undergraduate, and can directly address common undergraduate misconceptions. Furthermore, most entries have an "interpretation" section that explains the results of a published data figure using the method, giving students real-life practice with data interpretation.

This is a long-term work in progress, and I welcome entries from other faculty. There is also the possibility of making student-written, faculty-reviewed entries into projects for biology courses, or opportunities for graduate students and postdocs. To discuss, please email me. Email: Katie Mattaini.
