I. Understand, and give examples for, the differences between intrinsic and instrumental value of a species (review)
II. Know the difference between the background extinction rate (10-100 species/year), and the rate of extinction during a mass extinction event (and time scales involved)
§ First 5 mass extinctions: 1-5 million years (be able to recognize the 5 examples)
§ Current mass extinction: 10,000 years with rapid acceleration in the past 50
§ years
III. Know the factors that make a species more vulnerable to extinction:
§ Species has limited geologic range, ex. limited to island
§ Species requires large territory
§ Species has low population size/low genetic diversity/low reproductive success
§ Species has highly specialized food or habitat requirements (know examples)
IV. Be able to explain the acronym HIPPO (why species become endangered)
§ Direct habitat destruction
o Conversion,
o fragmentation,
o simplification, intrusion
§ Invasive species
§ Pollution
o Chemical, eutrophication, disease
§ Overpopulation of humans (relates to all others)
§ Overexploitation (hunted, etc)
V. Be able to define the types of endangerment:
§ Endangered species: imminent danger of extinction throughout all or significant proportion of its range
§ Threatened: population numbers are low enough that it is likely to become endangered throughout all or significant proportions of its range
§ Species of special concern: native wildlife and plants that require special attention to ensure their conservation
VI. Describe effective management strategies for protecting species
§ Protect existing habitats
§ Restore damaged habitats
§ Eradicate invasives
§ Manage imbalances in the ecosystem
§ Captive breeding and seed banks (last resort)
