Fermentation (an anaerobic metabolic process that allows cells to produce ATP in the absence of oxygen) enables energy production when aerobic respiration cannot occur. Unlike aerobic and anaerobic respiration, fermentation does not use an electron transport chain. Instead, its primary role is to regenerate NAD⁺ so that glycolysis can continue to produce ATP. Fermentation always begins with glycolysis, which breaks down glucose into pyruvate and produces a small amount of ATP and NADH. Because glycolysis requires NAD⁺, cells must continuously replenish this electron carrier. When oxygen or alternative electron acceptors are unavailable, fermentation provides a solution by recycling NADH back to NAD⁺.

    Purpose of Fermentation

The main function of fermentation is not to produce large amounts of ATP but to maintain the supply of NAD⁺ needed for glycolysis. Without fermentation, glycolysis would stop once all available NAD⁺ is reduced to NADH, halting ATP production entirely. As a result, fermentation allows cells to survive and function under low-oxygen or oxygen-free conditions, even though ATP yield is much lower than in aerobic respiration.
