This section examines the evolution and development of specific novel traits including ectodermal appendages (like hair and sweat glands), lactose tolerance in adults, and eyespots in butterflies (thumbnail image).
Several of these sections were written by students as they took Evolutionary Developmental Biology as part of their final projects.

- What we call "lactose intolerance" in adults is actually the ancestral state for humans. The evolution of the ability to digest milk sugar (lactose) as adults has happened multiple times in humans.
