President of MBARI
CONGRATULATIONS! You have just been given the job of CEO of MBARI for a few weeks! You have all the funds, personnel, and resources at your disposal for that period. Using what you learned during our tour and what you will read on their website (www.mbari.org), design a large-scale and difficult-to-answer question that can be solvable in the time frame of a few weeks, but utilizes the vast resources of MBARI well. Think big and grand…but make sure it is doable.
Turn in your proposal with the following information (One page, typed):
- A statement of the question(s) being asked and the reason it is of such importance and interest (hey, even CEOs need to answer to the Board of Directors)
- List the resources, both people and equipment, that you will need to do this work.
- Explain the experimental methods you would utilize to answer your question and what it would take to make sense of the data you collect (just collecting data isn't enough, you need to figure out what it all means)
Write up the proposal like you were presenting the idea to the board of directors, and show that you have thought it through. You could easily spend a few million dollars in a few weeks, so you'd better make sure it is worth it!
