Medical biotechnology (the application of biological science and engineering to improve human health through the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease) uses living organisms, cells, and biological molecules to develop new ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat disease. Advances in this field have led to innovative therapies, improved diagnostics, vaccines, and personalized treatments for conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and genetic disorders.

This chapter explores four key areas of medical biotechnology: biopharmacy (the discovery, development, manufacturing, regulation, and clinical use of biologically derived medicines), biopharmaceuticals (medicines produced using living cells or organisms), pharmacogenomics (the study of how genetic differences influence an individual's response to medications), and nanomedicine (the use of nanoscale materials and technologies to diagnose and treat disease). Together, these technologies are transforming modern healthcare and improving patient outcomes.
