    Global agricultural systems are shaped by a combination of factors, including climate, topography, soil type, and socioeconomic conditions, such as a region's level of economic development. The choice to devote land to livestock rather than crops is often due to the area being too dry, too rough to cultivate, too high in elevation, or too far from markets to make crop production profitable.

    Animals play a vital role in these systems, but their ability to thrive depends on their adaptation to both natural and artificial environments. Adaptation is the total of an organism's adjustments that promote its survival and well-being in a specific environment. This includes morphological (anatomical), physiological (biochemical), and behavioral changes. Stresses on agricultural animals can be climatic, nutritional, internal (like pathogens), geographical, and social.
