- In this lab, you will explore the kingdom of mushrooms, yeast, and bread molds as well as state multiple phyla within that kingdom. Also, be able to identify different parts of the species in the Fungi kingdom. Lastly, name organisms which have a symbiotic relationship with lichen and provide an example of a lichen.
- 3.2: Reading - Fungi
- Fungi in the phylum Zygomycota are called zygomycetes. The zygomycetes are terrestrial. They are usually saprotrophs but there are some parasites. The hyphae are coenocytic (they lack septa). Septa are found only in the reproductive structures. The fusion of two hyphae leads to the formation of a zygosporangium, a thick-walled structure that is capable of surviving environmental extremes.
