Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals, which are synthesized through chemical reactions, biopharmaceuticals are manufactured using genetically engineered bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells, or other living systems. Because they are produced by living organisms, biopharmaceuticals are large, complex molecules that are much more difficult to manufacture than conventional drugs and require carefully controlled production processes.
Most biopharmaceuticals are proteins or other biological molecules that are naturally found in the human body. Scientists use recombinant DNA technology to insert a human gene into a host cell, enabling the cell to produce the desired therapeutic protein. The genetically engineered cells are grown in large bioreactors (specialized vessels that provide controlled conditions for growing cells and producing biological products), where temperature, pH, oxygen, nutrients, and other environmental conditions are carefully monitored to maximize production while maintaining product quality. After production, the biologic is purified, tested for safety and potency, and formulated into its final dosage form before being distributed to healthcare providers.
One of the greatest advantages of biopharmaceuticals is their ability to target specific biological processes involved in disease. Many biologics bind to a single protein, receptor, or immune cell, allowing them to treat disease more precisely than many traditional medications. This targeted approach often increases treatment effectiveness while reducing damage to healthy tissues and minimizing unwanted side effects. As a result, biopharmaceuticals have transformed the treatment of diseases that previously had few effective treatment options.
Today, biopharmaceuticals are used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions, including diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, anemia, hemophilia, osteoporosis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, and many rare genetic disorders. They have also played an important role in preventing infectious diseases through recombinant vaccines and treating inherited diseases through gene and cell therapies.
