Cellular energy (the usable chemical energy that powers cellular processes) is stored, transferred, and utilized through tightly regulated biochemical pathways. Rather than releasing energy all at once, cells extract and manage energy in controlled steps that support life without causing cellular damage.
Energy within cells is primarily stored in chemical bonds and released through metabolic reactions. Much of this energy is transferred in the form of high-energy electrons, which move through oxidation–reduction reactions during metabolism. By controlling the flow of electrons, cells are able to capture energy efficiently and direct it toward the synthesis of ATP, the molecule that directly powers cellular work.
Cells rely on specialized molecules, such as electron carriers, to transport energy between reactions. These carriers temporarily store high-energy electrons and deliver them to pathways that generate ATP. This system allows cells to balance energy production with energy demand and maintain metabolic stability.
