- Two different species of bacteria (look for different cell shapes and different Gram results).
- One species is Gram-positive (purple) and one species is Gram-negative (pink).
- The Gram-positive cells are bacilli and the Gram-negative cells are cocci.
While only two species of bacteria can be distinguished, it is possible that there could be more than two. There are many species of Gram-positive bacilli and many species of Gram-negative cocci.
