Traits like "how much milk does a cow produce" and "how likely are you to die of heart disease" may feel fundamentally different from the monogenic traits we've seen thus far, but you'll see that understanding them is based on the same ideas of polymorphism, transmission, and recombination that we've already been studying. It's just that there are many polymorphisms involved, which changes the analytical tools we use to understand these traits and their genetic (and environmental) basis.
At the end of this chapter, you should be able to:

Define “complex trait,” describe the genetic basis of complex traits, and describe the factors that contribute to the phenotypic variance of a complex trait.

Define and distinguish broad-sense heritability from narrow-sense heritability, and determine which is applicable to a given situation
