Identify the appropriate data table based on the island to which you are assigned. Record the number of each beak type in your group for your island (see Table 1 below). If there is a specific beak type that is not present on your island enter a 0 in that column.
Table 1 Beak # Beak Type 1 Tweezers 2 Salad Tongs 3 Clips 4 Stapler Remover 5 Mutation - Work with your group members to set up your island using the supplies provided. The fabric will serve as the “substrate” for your island and the various small objects will serve as your “food”. Be sure to record the types of food items in Data Table 1 for your specific island. All members of your group should record these food items in the same order. Note that each island will begin with 4 different food types, though there are 5 slots for food types on your data table. An extra slot is provided in case a new food type is introduced during the simulation.
- Use your beaks to forage with your group members for 10 seconds trying to collect as many “food” items as possible. Wait until your instructor announces that time has begun and listen to your instructor to signal that time is up.
- After foraging, count the number of food items your group collected and record the total amount of food eaten as well as the amounts of each type of food in Data Table 2 for your specific island. This represents the foraging behavior for one “season”.
- The team with the highest total amount of food gains one team member. The new team member will take on the same “beak” structure as the group member who was most successful at foraging food in that “season”.
- The team with the least amount of food loses a team member. The team member that is lost is the one that was the least successful at foraging food in that “season”.
- The team member who is lost by the least successful island will become the member which is added to the most successful island.
- If you are one of the individuals that moves from one island to a new one, you should begin recording data for the island which you enter starting at the season in which you enter that island. For example, if you begin on Island Floreana but then at the end of season 4 you move to Island Genovesa, begin recording data in the table for Island Genovesa starting in season 5.
- Repeat steps 2-5 for a total of 5 “seasons.”
- At the end of 5 seasons, each team picks a card from the “events” pile and follows the directions on the card. Once you have considered the outcome of your “event”, a typical foraging “season” will be carried out as described above in steps 2-5 for two additional “seasons”. Be sure to record a brief description of the event selected in Data Table 3 for your specific island.
- At the end of the activity, select one member of your group to share your island’s data with the class. You will need to record the data for each island to complete your report for this lab activity.
