- The question of where life came from, or abiogenesis, is a separate question to how, once life arose, did we get the diversity that we see today. In this section we'll discuss some aspects of early earth to get an understanding of the current lines of thought on how life came to be.
- 2.2: Eukaryotic Origins
- The origin of eukaryotic cells was largely a mystery until a revolutionary hypothesis was comprehensively examined in the 1960s by Lynn Margulis. The endosymbiotic theory states that eukaryotes are a product of one prokaryotic cell engulfing another, one living within another, and evolving together over time until the separate cells were no longer recognizable as such. This once-revolutionary hypothesis had immediate persuasiveness and is now widely accepted.
- 2.3: Homeostasis
- A vast proportion of an organism's life is spent trying to maintain a proper internal environment so it can stay alive long enough to reproduce. This section discusses various specific examples of how organisms such as us maintain proper temperature and water levels.
