The pathogenic Gram-positive cocci comprise two main groups of bacteria: the Staphylococci and Streptococci (the genus Enterococcus is grouped with the Streptococci).  The only true pathogen in the genus Staphylococcus is Staph. aureus, but it is a nosocomial pathogen of great concern.  There are multiple pathogens in the Streptococci, but only four of the most relevant Streptococcal pathogens to this course are addressed here: Strep. pneumoniae, Strep. pyogenes, the viridans Streptococci, and Enterococcus spp. (faecalis and faecium).
