The lab manual and instructor guidelines are formatted in this way to support two lab periods.
Seedless plant lab
Objectives: Introduce students to the diversity of seedless plants, help students get to know major groups, help students understand adaptations of early plants and features assisting in the transition to land.
Pull sheets contain specimens, models, slides, and posters in use at Evergreen Valley College. Lab may be modified depending on resources and availability of specimens at adopting college. If lab is modified, ensure adequate representation of major groups (mosses, liverworts, hornworts, club mosses, ferns, horsetails, whisk ferns).
Seed plant lab
Objectives: Introduce students to the diversity of seed plants, help students get to know major groups, help students understand the importance of seeds, and how life cycles and features (like fruits and flowers) have made these groups so successful and diverse today.
Pull sheets contain specimens, models, slides, and posters in use at Evergreen Valley College. Lab may be modified depending on resources and availability of specimens at adopting college. If lab is modified, ensure adequate representation of major groups (gymnosperms and angiosperms).
Send students on a campus scavenger hunt and list gymnosperms and angiosperms found. Have students download the Seek by iNaturalist app on their phone (group students if not all have devices). This app can be used for the outdoor campus identification for this and future labs.
