Control of microorganisms is essential to prevent the transmission of diseases and infection, stop decomposition and spoilage, and prevent unwanted microbial contamination. Microorganisms are controlled by means of physical agents and chemical agents. We will now look at the two sides of the story with regards to controlling bacterial infections by means of chemicals: (1) ways in which our control agents may affect bacteria and (2) ways in which bacteria may resist our control agents.
