    Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\): The cell cycle. Cells spend most of their time in interphase. If the cell will be specializing for a particular job, it will enter G0. If the cell will be dividing, it enters G1 (gap 1) during which the cell replicates organelles and cytoplasmic contents. During S phase (synthesis), the DNA is replicated. In G2, the cell checks that it is ready to divide. M is this diagram represents cell division. Here, mitosis is shown, resulting in two daughter cells.
