Some bacteria are able to break urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia by means of the exoenzyme urease.
- Obtain a tube of urea broth.
- Using an inoculating loop, swish some of your assigned organism into the broth.
- Incubate the tube for at least 48 hours.
- After the incubation period, note the color of the broth.
If urease is produced, the medium will be cerise.
